Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reacted strongly to the escalating discussions surrounding migrants in the capital via TVS. He emphasized that the complaints of some citizens about "violence by low-skilled and unfamiliar migrants" do not fully reflect the real situation and in many cases turn out to be unfounded.
Sobyanin boldly addressed the "specialists" who were criticizing the migrants, inviting them to do what the migrants were doing themselves:
"If they really are so eager, let them take a broom and try cleaning the streets of Moscow. Even if they have higher education or a doctor of science, let them try doing this work. But they don't do that. "Well, who will do this work?" - said the mayor.
In his opinion, migrants with highly qualified specialties are important for the capital's economy, because Muscovites do not want to take on physical labor. "I don't see any logic here," added Sobyanin.
According to the mayor, the number of labor migrants in Moscow has not changed since 2018. At the same time, citing statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was reported that serious crimes committed among migrants have significantly decreased.
According to him:
- robberies decreased by 7.5 times;
- the number of murders decreased by 2 times;
- improvement was also observed in theft and other crimes.
Sobyanin emphasized that it is incorrect to specify the crime only because it was committed by a migrant:
"First of all, the crime must be solved and proven. Only then will the identity of the criminal be established - a Russian or a migrant."
At the same time, the mayor acknowledged that he was far from idealizing the general situation:
"Of course, the large number of visitors in the capital requires additional attention, strict order, and control. There's no such thing as everything is wonderful."
Sobyanin's statement further heated up discussions on the migrant issue. As can be seen from his thoughts, the Moscow leadership advocates for a balanced approach in migration policy - a fair approach between economic needs and public safety.
