Scientists discovered remarkably "golden" remains of an ancient marine creature completely unknown in the US state of New York. Researchers named this new organism Lomankus edgecombei. It is said that these animals lived on planet Earth more than 450 million years ago.
Interestingly, while many paleontological finds lose their shape under pressure and time, these specimens have practically not lost their anatomy. Over millions of years, their tiny body parts were gradually replaced by the metal - pyrite. As a result, the animal's external structure remained almost ideal.
According to Luc Perry, a paleobiologist at Oxford University, pyrite is usually caused by bacteria that are activated in an oxygen-free environment. After these bacteria decompose organic matter, the released gas reacts with iron to form sulfide.
As a result of the research, scientists obtained an extremely accurate, three-dimensional anatomical complex of creatures that lived during the era of the destroyed arthropods. This helps to clarify the idea of how extra legs evolved into antennae, claws, or tooth-like organs during evolution.
Such findings once again prove how mysterious and comprehensive the history of human life on Earth is.
