U.S.–Venezuela confrontation: U.S. halts Venezuela’s oil exports

The U.S. government announced that it had stopped an oil tanker traveling in international waters near the coast of Venezuela. According to U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the tanker was carrying oil loaded in Venezuela and subject to sanctions. This incident occurred after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

White House officials said the stopped vessel was operating under a false flag and was part of Venezuela’s “shadow fleet.” U.S. authorities claim that such tankers are involved in illegally financing the Venezuelan government. For this reason, the United States said it will continue to take strict measures against such vessels.

The Venezuelan government strongly condemned the action, calling it a violation of international law and maritime piracy. Officials in Caracas said they would raise the issue with the United Nations and other international organizations.

Following the incident, Venezuela’s oil exports have significantly declined. Many tankers, fearing seizure, are remaining loaded within the country’s waters. Experts say that if this situation continues for a long time, global oil prices may rise.
