China urges U.S. to reduce nuclear weapons
Following a Pentagon draft report, China urged the United States to take the lead in reducing nuclear weapons. The report stated that China had deployed more than 100 intercontinental missiles near the Mongolian border and showed no interest in broader arms control talks.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that as the country with the largest nuclear arsenal, the U.S. should reduce its stockpile and encourage other nuclear powers to join disarmament efforts. Lin added that U.S. statements about China’s nuclear program serve as justification for modernizing its own weapons.

The Pentagon report noted that China is rapidly expanding and modernizing its nuclear forces. In 2024, China had about 600 nuclear warheads, expected to exceed 1,000 by 2030. The U.S. currently has about 5,177 nuclear warheads.

China’s statements followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent signals that Washington may hold talks with China and Russia on nuclear reductions. Beijing emphasized the importance of taking real steps to ensure global strategic stability.
