Venezuela and the US begin process to restore diplomatic ties

Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez made an important statement on January 9 regarding the US’s revised diplomatic policy. According to her, Venezuela and the United States are considering restoring diplomatic missions and resuming embassy operations. These contacts are a new step toward rebuilding diplomatic relations that have been severed for seven years, and both countries have decided to launch the process on a trial basis.
According to the US State Department, US diplomats traveled to Caracas, Venezuela, on January 9 to assess the possibilities of restoring embassy operations. The New York Times noted that beyond the initial organizational steps by both sides, the process is being conducted as an experiment and a test.
Rodríguez said the goal of restoring diplomatic ties is also linked to the consequences of the kidnapping of Venezuela’s president and first lady, as well as advancing a mutually beneficial agenda for both sides.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump convened executives of American oil companies at the White House on January 9 to discuss investing in Venezuelan oil. The move was aimed at signaling greater US interest in Venezuela’s oil industry and taking strategic interests into account.
