Crane collapses onto train in Thailand: 22 dead, 80 injured

A real tragedy unfolded in northeastern Thailand: a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train, causing the cars to derail. Preliminary reports say at least 22 people were killed and around 80 suffered injuries of varying severity.

The incident occurred at about 09:00 local time in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province—230 km northeast of Bangkok. The train was traveling from the capital toward Ubon Ratchathani when the crane reportedly suddenly fell in an area where work was underway as part of a high-speed rail project.

“The worst part is that the crane crushed the carriages”

Officials said there were 195 passengers on board. The crane struck three cars, with the heaviest damage reported in the last two—where most of the fatalities occurred.

Reports also say rescue efforts were made harder by the condition of the crushed cars and the risk of structural shifting. As a result, recovering bodies and evacuating the injured was not easy.

According to Thailand’s health authorities, all passengers have been removed from the scene. It was also noted that the youngest injured person is 1 year old and the oldest is 59.

Investigation launched as causes are clarified

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said an investigation has been appointed to study the incident “thoroughly and comprehensively.” The key question now is: why and under what conditions did the crane fall? This is not just a technical failure—it is a safety issue on a route used by thousands of people.

Warning backdrop: construction safety concerns

The tragedy is likely to put construction-site safety compliance back on Thailand’s agenda. Reports citing the 2022 Workmen’s Compensation Fund study say that in 2021 alone, more than 4,500 people in the construction sector were killed or injured.

In short, this is not just an accident—it is a hard wake-up call for the system. The most important answer the public now expects from the investigation is whether such tragedies can be prevented in advance.
