US President Donald Trump has once again sparked widespread discussion in the international arena with his sharp and controversial statement about Cuba. According to Reuters, while departing from the White House to Texas, he stated that the Cuban government was in dialogue with the US, that the island nation was facing a severe crisis, and even mentioned the possibility of a "friendly seizure of Cuba."
In his speech, Trump described Cuba as a "nation in crisis." According to him, the shortage of money, oil, and food in the country has intensified, forcing Havana to establish contact with Washington. Trump also added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was involved in this process "at a very high level."
However, Havana reacted differently to this statement. According to Reuters, the Cuban government stated that it is not holding any high-level official talks with the US. Nevertheless, reports of some informal contacts have not been completely denied: in particular, reports have emerged that Marco Rubio had indirect communication with Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, grandson of former Cuban leader Raúl Castro.
Against the backdrop of these statements, tensions around Cuba are also increasing. According to Reuters and AP, armed individuals aboard a high-speed boat recently registered in Florida entered Cuban waters and clashed with patrol forces. This incident resulted in the deaths of several people and further exacerbated tensions in Washington-Havana relations.
At the same time, US pressure on Cuba has also intensified recently. International sources note the introduction of serious restrictions on oil supplies to the island, which further exacerbates the economic crisis in the country. The same crisis situation was cited as the main argument in Trump's words.
In short, Trump's statement about the "friendly seizure" was not just a diplomatic comment, but a political signal indicating the beginning of a new and more controversial stage in US-Cuban relations. So far, there are contradictory statements regarding official negotiations, but one thing is clear: the situation around Cuba is becoming increasingly serious and the focus of attention of the entire region.
