Germany expects refugee influx from Iran crisis

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that the escalation of the situation in Iran could pose a new migration risk for Europe. Speaking at a press conference following an international fair in Munich, the Chancellor emphasized that Berlin officials do not want a repeat of the 2015 Syrian scenario. According to him, maintaining Iran's stability and sovereignty is of critical importance not only for the region but also for European security.

Merz noted that Iran's population exceeds 90 million and emphasized the need to meet socio-economic needs within the country. In the Chancellor's view, if Iran's governance weakens or an economic collapse occurs, it could lead to millions of people heading towards Europe. For now, the German government is struggling to assess the exact scale of a potential refugee influx, but it is clear that if the situation gets out of control, it will be a serious test for the European Union.

Recall that the migration crisis caused by the civil war in Syria, which began in 2011, reached its peak in 2015. At that time, about one million refugees entered Germany. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to accept refugees put significant pressure on the country's social system and forced the conversion of infrastructure, including schools and factories, into temporary shelters. This process caused sharp changes in German domestic politics and paved the way for the popularity of political forces demanding migration restrictions, such as the "Alternative for Germany".

Friedrich Merz called on the US and Israel to sit down at the negotiating table with Iran sooner to ease the current situation. The Chancellor emphasized that achieving stability through diplomatic means is the only effective way to prevent a refugee influx. The German government is trying to protect its borders and social stability by maintaining Iran's sovereignty. Any future geopolitical crisis could force European countries to reconsider their migration policies once again.
