Where did the word come from?
The origin of the word “skuf” is also connected with the internet. The term appeared on the well-known Russian imageboard Двач. Its emergence is linked to the moderator of the political section named Алексей Скуфин.
According to reports, during a conflict with another user, Skufin recorded a video message in which he did not hide his face and spoke very aggressively. After that, forum users de-anonymized him and began actively mocking and discussing him. Gradually, his surname turned into a meme.
Thus, initially the word “skuf” did not describe a general type of man. It referred to a specific individual. Later, the meme separated from its original source and turned into a label for a whole social and visual type. Interestingly, other derivative meme words also appeared from it, such as “skufidon,” “skufization,” and similar variations.
How did the word enter mass culture?
After appearing on the imageboard, the word did not immediately become widely popular. The sharp rise in popularity occurred later, when memes began spreading to broader social networks. This especially happened in short formats — reels, TikTok videos, humorous compilations, and discussions comparing “who is confident and who is not.”
