Russian drones struck western Ukraine

A Russian drone struck the regional headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service in the western Lviv region on the evening of March 18, according to regional military administration chief Maksym Kozytskyi. Initial reports said no one was injured in the attack, though the building and surrounding area suffered damage. Officials did not immediately specify the exact type of drone involved or provide a full assessment of the consequences.

Kozytskyi said emergency services and local authorities were searching for drone fragments in Lviv after the strike. He warned residents not to approach any debris, stressing that unexploded parts could still pose a danger. Such warnings are common after drone attacks, as wreckage may contain explosive elements or hazardous materials.

Later the same evening, Shahed drones also targeted Ukraine’s Volyn region, according to regional military administration head Roman Romaniuk. He said an important infrastructure facility was damaged in the attack. As a result, one district in the region lost electricity, leaving more than 30,000 residents without power.

Novovolynsk Mayor Borys Karpus provided additional details, saying an energy infrastructure site sustained serious damage and caught fire. He said repair crews would begin restoration work as soon as conditions allowed. Local authorities also opened four so-called “points of resilience,” public support centers where residents can warm up, recharge devices, and access basic services during emergency outages.

The attacks highlighted the continued vulnerability of western Ukrainian regions, which are far from the heaviest front-line fighting but remain exposed to long-range drone strikes. Ukrainian officials have not yet released further information on the full scale of the damage in either Lviv or Volyn, and assessments were still ongoing at the time of the announcement.
