U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, in a speech at the White House, firmly denied any connection with financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This was reported by The Washington Post.
Melania described the vague and unsubstantiated claims against her as “false” and stressed that they must come to an immediate end. She stated that she had no involvement in Epstein’s abuse of his victims in any form.
At the same time, she referred to Epstein and his close associate Ghislaine Maxwell only as acquaintances, saying they occasionally met at events in the early 2000s attended by her and Donald Trump.
The U.S. President’s wife said that attempts to damage her reputation were “politically and financially motivated defamation” and must stop.
Melania also called on Congress to hold hearings regarding Epstein’s victims. However, she declined to answer journalists’ questions.
The U.S. President, in a brief comment to MS NOW, said he was not aware of the issue before his wife’s statement. He also added that he does not personally know Epstein.
Discussions about Melania’s possible links to Epstein have intensified since the beginning of this year, following the release of a 2002 email sent to Maxwell.
In the email, she refers to Maxwell as “G” and asks her to get in touch after returning to New York. She also expresses positive remarks about Maxwell’s photograph in a magazine.
Melania stated that the correspondence was merely casual and insisted she had never been in places associated with Epstein.
Epstein, who died in custody in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges, became the focus of renewed public debate after related documents were released.
In recent months, other geopolitical and economic issues have somewhat shifted attention away from the case, but Melania’s new statement may bring it back into focus.
