Village names are changing in Kyrgyzstan: new rules are being introduced

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov has announced a plan to gradually replace Russian-language village names with Kyrgyz ones by 2027 to strengthen national identity and restore historical nomenclature. Additionally, new rules will limit naming villages after specific individuals, as the president believes historical figures are already honored in history books without needing their names on geographic locations. While experts suggest these changes bolster national pride, they note that the transition may be received differently across various regions.
President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov announced plans to gradually replace Russian-language village names in the country with Kyrgyz ones. According to him, this process is expected to be fully completed by 2027.
The Head of State emphasized that this initiative is aimed at strengthening national values and the language, as well as restoring historical names. This will ensure that geographical names in the country are unified in a national spirit.
At the same time, the president announced the introduction of a new rule to restrict the naming of villages after individuals. In his opinion, the names of historical figures have already been imprinted in the memory of the people, and it is not necessary to reflect this in the names of places.
"The name of Olimbek Dodkho has already taken its place in history." The village will not develop faster because it is named after him," Sadyr Japarov noted.
According to experts, while these changes may serve to strengthen national identity, it is not impossible that they will be perceived differently by the population in certain regions.
