South Korean company SK Hynix has drawn significant attention by paying out substantial bonuses to its employees. According to reports, the company allocated a total fund of $16.9 billion to be distributed among 35,000 employees. On average, each employee could receive a bonus of up to $470,000.
This decision is attributed to the company's success in the semiconductor market, particularly in the production of HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) chips for Nvidia. This specific technology plays a crucial role in the operation of data centers designed for artificial intelligence, which has led to a sharp increase in SK Hynix's revenue.
However, this situation has also sparked various debates in society. Some citizens in South Korea have pointed out that the state supported the industry with $13.6 billion in loans in 2024, arguing that the company's profits should be considered a "collective resource." They emphasize that a portion of these massive profits should be distributed to the general public rather than solely to employees. This has intensified new discussions regarding the balance between corporate profit and state support.
