Former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has called on European nations to act more decisively and independently on security issues. In his view, the current geopolitical situation poses a historic question for Europe: can the continent ensure its own security?
In an interview with WELT, Rasmussen described the current situation as a sign of a serious crisis within NATO. According to him, the processes observed in Europe show that the military-political alliance is not as solid as it once was. Therefore, he emphasized that European states must develop new defense plans, increase their military capabilities, and prepare seriously for the future security system.
The former Secretary General believes that Ukraine should not be on the periphery of this system, but at its center. Because in wartime conditions, Ukraine has gained significant experience in producing weapons and ammunition in a short time. Rasmussen considers this factor crucial for Europe's future defense architecture.
He stated, "We need Ukraine as a shield against Russia." This is not just a simple political statement. It contains a serious signal regarding Europe's future security strategy: if Europe wants to appear strong, it must not ignore Ukraine's experience and military capabilities.
Rasmussen's views once again show that the situation around Ukraine is not limited to the fate of one country. This issue is linked to the security of all of Europe, the future of NATO, and the position the West takes toward Russia. In other words, it is not just about a new alliance, but about the continent's ability to defend itself.
For context, Anders Fogh Rasmussen served as NATO Secretary General from 2009 to 2014. He has previously made sharp and clear proposals regarding Ukraine's security, including the need for Europe to increase pressure on Russia.
Today's situation shows that peace for Europe cannot be maintained by diplomatic statements alone. Strong defense, clear plans, and reliable partners are needed. Rasmussen openly states that Ukraine could become one such partner. In other words, Europe can no longer remain in a "wait and see" mode — the clock of history is already ticking.
