The Unrecognized New State in the World: The Free Republic of Verdis

Today, nearly all areas of the world have been mapped and are under the control of particular states. For this reason, establishing a new state in the modern era seems almost impossible. Yet along the Danube on the Croatia–Serbia border, an unusual project claims otherwise.

This refers to the Free Republic of Verdis, established in one of the disputed territories between the two countries. The area has a complicated status because of border disputes between Croatia and Serbia.

The project was founded in 2019 by Daniel Jackson, who was still a minor at the time. Jackson and his supporters decided not to leave Verdis as merely an internet joke and began creating distinctive state symbols for it.

As part of the project, a flag, anthem, constitution, and other state attributes were developed. Verdis has also continued trying to present itself as an independent state.

However, the Free Republic of Verdis has not yet been officially recognized by the UN or any country in the world. Therefore, it is not acknowledged internationally as an independent state.

Nevertheless, the Verdis project remains an interesting example of how unusual the idea of creating a “new state” can become in the modern world.
