Sales of the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology, the electric version of the iconic G-Class, have failed to meet expectations, according to Handelsblatt via auto.mail.ru.
As of late April:
• Only 1450 units were sold in Europe
• 61 in South Korea
• 58 in China
• Zero in the United States
In contrast, the gasoline G-Class sells about 7 times more.
Why such low demand?
• The electric version looks nearly identical to the gas model, lacking distinct EV advantages like extended wheelbase.
• It’s heavier and has a shorter range.
• Luxury SUV buyers are often conservative, preferring internal combustion engines as symbols of status.
Due to this, Mercedes-Benz may reconsider its EV direction, possibly pivoting back to hybrids or traditional powertrains. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
