Waymo company became the first to obtain a permit from the city to test its autonomous vehicles in New York, TechCrunch reported. According to the company, the tests will begin immediately.
Within the permit framework, Waymo will deploy up to eight of its Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV models on the streets of Manhattan and central Brooklyn until the end of September. The vehicles must always have a qualified operator, whose hand must be on the steering wheel. Also, passenger transportation is not yet allowed.
This step brings the company closer to launching its robotaxi service in New York. Waymo currently operates in San Francisco, Austin, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. New York is considered one of the most challenging cities for testing due to its complex road infrastructure.
