The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the shortlists for 12 categories for the 98th Academy Awards. This stage traditionally selects the strongest projects of the year and paves the way for the main nominations.
According to AP, the two most frequently mentioned projects in the shortlists are the film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, and the musical Wicked: For Good. These works stand out as they have been recognized in multiple technical and music categories simultaneously.
This year's shortlists include the following categories: animated short film, live-action short film, documentary feature, documentary short, international feature film, casting, cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, sound design, visual effects, and the music categories — original song and original score.
The music section, in particular, attracted attention for the inclusion of renowned names. It has been reported that songs and scores by global stars such as Nine Inch Nails, Miley Cyrus, and Ed Sheeran are included in the shortlists. This suggests fierce competition in the music categories this year.
The next phase — voting for nominations — is set to take place from January 12 to January 16, 2026. The official nominees are planned to be announced on January 22.
For reference, the 98th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 15, 2026. It has been confirmed that the event will be hosted by famed comedian and showman Conan O’Brien. For movie enthusiasts, the main intrigue is only just beginning.
