The plot of the famous film Home Alone has been reexamined from a scientific perspective. American physicist Luis Batalha concluded that the film's central event — Kevin being left home alone — may not be a coincidence.
According to the scientist’s calculations, under certain conditions, the probability of parents accidentally forgetting one of their children at home is only 0.13%. This suggests that the situation shown in the film is not merely a mistake.
Batalha noted that even if the parents went to bed around 11:00 p.m. and woke up early for their flight, the chances of unintentionally leaving behind one of five children are extremely low. Thus, he puts forward the idea that the events may have been premeditated.
In his view, this gives the film, usually perceived as a comedy, a much deeper psychological meaning. Beneath the cheerful plot may lie parental responsibility and inner guilt.
For reference, Home Alone was released in 1990 and tells the story of a boy left alone at home by his family during the Christmas holiday and his defense of the house from burglars.
