The leader in the import of fruits and vegetables in the Kazakh market has changed

According to the results of January-September 2025, imports of fruits and vegetables to Kazakhstan demonstrated stable growth. In financial terms, this indicator increased by 3.2 percent and reached 559.7 million dollars. Physical volume grew even faster, increasing by 10.3% and amounting to 1.2 million tons. This situation indicates that the demand for foreign suppliers in the neighboring country's market is still high.

Kazakhstan imports almost all types of fruit and vegetable products. The largest share belongs to bananas, the import of which is estimated at $49.5 million. Potatoes ($46.3 million), tomatoes ($42.7 million), grapes ($34.3 million), onions ($32.2 million), apples ($32.1 million), citrus fruits ($31.2 million), and peaches ($26.6 million) are also among the most in-demand products.

In the context of countries, a significant change has been observed. Uzbekistan, previously considered the main supplier for Kazakhstan, lost its leading position to China. In the reporting period of 2025, imports of fruits and vegetables from China increased by 39% and reached $181.7 million. Deliveries from Uzbekistan, on the contrary, decreased by 12% and amounted to $128.6 million.

Such a change in the market is primarily explained by a sharp increase in potato imports from China. In particular, $33.4 million worth of potatoes, or 136,000 tons, were imported from this country. At the same time, China more than doubled the volume of grape supplies and exported products worth $22.8 million (34.9 thousand tons). In addition, China began supplying carrots to Kazakhstan, and there was a significant increase in imports of citrus fruits, apricots, and tomatoes. In physical terms, imports from China increased 2.2 times over the year, reaching 401,000 tons.

The volume of products imported from Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan amounted to about 360 thousand tons. At the same time, the share of China and Uzbekistan together accounts for about 55% of all imports of fruits and vegetables to Kazakhstan.

Comparative analysis shows that in the first nine months of 2018, fruits and vegetables worth 310.9 million dollars were supplied to Kazakhstan from Uzbekistan, while imports from China amounted to only 65.4 million dollars. Over the past years, the situation has changed dramatically: exports from Uzbekistan decreased by 2.4 times, while deliveries from China, on the contrary, increased by 2.8 times.

According to experts, logistics, pricing policy, and the expansion of product lines are decisive factors in China's dominance in the Kazakh market. This indicates the growing competition in the agrarian market of the region.
