Lack of sleep increases jealousy and weakens trust

Lack of sleep increases jealousy and weakens trust
A new study by researchers at Montana State University looks at how poor sleep quality affects emotional relationships. The findings, presented at the Sleep 2025 international conference, show that sleep problems, especially in people with anxious attachment styles, increase feelings of jealousy and reduce trust.

How was the study conducted?

The two-week study involved 68 young adults. They completed daily questionnaires to assess their sleep quality, emotional state, and behavior. In addition, participants completed a psychological test to determine their personal attachment style.

Anxious attachment is a high-risk condition

The data analysis showed that people with an anxious attachment style — that is, those who feel more insecure in relationships and fear rejection — may be more susceptible to emotional changes due to lack of sleep.

They were found to be more reactive to negative emotions such as jealousy and anxiety in the morning, after a poor night's sleep. Interestingly, this effect was not as pronounced in people with other attachment styles.

“It all depends on the individual”

The lead author of the study, Giovanni Alvarado, a doctoral student at Montana State University, says:

“The interesting thing is that poor sleep quality did not always cause negative emotions. For some people, sleep deprivation had a serious impact, while for others it did not lead to any emotional changes. It all depends on individual psychological characteristics.”

Healthy sleep is the basis of a stable psycho-emotional state

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends that adults get at least 7 hours of full and quality sleep per night. Not only the duration of sleep, but also its continuity, regularity and comfortable environment play an important role.

Quality sleep is a fundamental factor for balance in personal relationships, trust and healthy emotions. Starting the morning in a harmonious way has a positive effect not only on physical, but also on psychological health.
