One in five women who experience violence in Uzbekistan considers suicide

A survey conducted among women who suffered from violence in Uzbekistan revealed an alarming picture for society: every fifth woman who experienced abuse has thought about committing suicide. This was reported by the Social Policy Laboratory.

The survey results also show significant differences between regions. For example, in Andijan this figure is 33.3 percent, while in Navoi it is only 6 percent. According to specialists, the living environment greatly affects the psychological stability of women.

The analysis also shows that women try to cope with stress mainly through physical activity or doing household chores (29.2 percent), staying alone (23.9 percent), or emotional outbursts (22.5 percent). Most women find it difficult to share their feelings — accordingly, only 11.1 percent seek help from their relatives. Another 6.7 percent of respondents stated that they were unable to find any solution to get out of the stressful situation.

Official statistics also confirm the seriousness of the situation. In January–August 2025, more than 9 thousand people were held accountable for domestic violence and sexual behavior. Under Article 126¹ of the Criminal Code, 298 persons were convicted, 81 of them were sentenced to imprisonment. In administrative cases, measures were taken against 7,624 persons, of whom 6,585 received administrative arrest.

In addition, due to violence, 47 applications for divorce were submitted to courts during eight months of 2025, and 37 of them were approved. For sexual harassment, 1,450 persons were held accountable.

Experts emphasize that these figures indicate the need to expand measures to protect women and the scale of psychological assistance.
