New Era in Taiwan: Electron Beam Lithography System to Be Installed

Taiwan, recognized as the global hub of the semiconductor industry, is undergoing a major turning point in chip manufacturing technology. American company Multibeam has received its first order from Taiwan for its multi-beam electron-beam lithography (MBX) platform. This innovative equipment differs radically from traditional methods and is expected to open new doors in the field of nanotechnology, reports Ixbt.com reports .

As part of the project, the MBX system will be delivered to the College of Semiconductor Research at Taiwan's prestigious National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). According to ixbt.com, the installation of the equipment is scheduled for 2027. This step will serve not only academic research but also the creation of new-generation microsystems in cooperation with major chip-making enterprises on the island.

Abandoning traditional photomasks

The main advantage of MBX technology is that it allows for the complete elimination of traditional photomasks when creating circuit patterns. Typically, producing a new chip prototype requires expensive and complex masks, which makes the process costly in terms of both money and time.

Meanwhile, the Multibeam device projects the image directly onto the silicon wafer using multiple electron beams simultaneously. This approach allows new prototypes to be released immediately after the design is finalized. As a result, product development time is shortened and production costs are significantly reduced.

Foundation for future technologies

The developers note that this technology combines high precision and performance. It is expected to revolutionize the following areas:
  • Creation of advanced chip packaging;
  • Photonic components and quantum devices;
  • Specialized accelerators for AI;
  • Next-generation microelectronics research.

This contract is of strategic importance for Multibeam. Since Taiwan is the region with the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the global market, this first successful project here paves a wide path for the company into the global market. This, in turn, lays the groundwork for direct cooperation with factories supplying components for NVIDIA, Apple, and other tech giants.

Such innovations are also important for countries on the path of technological development like Uzbekistan. After all, cheaper and faster chip manufacturing processes globally directly impact the price and functionality of gadgets, home appliances, and automobiles.
