At least 48 people have died in a collapse of an illegal gold mine in western Mali, The Guardian reported, citing local police sources.

According to the agency's interlocutor, the incident occurred in an abandoned mine that previously belonged to a Chinese company. According to the sources, most of the dead were women. According to the head of the environmental organization, the search for victims is ongoing.

According to the agency, such incidents, which often lead to the death of many people, occur frequently due to illegal activities at mining sites.

Mali is the fourth largest gold producer in Africa. The country has vast reserves of gold, iron ore, manganese, lithium, and uranium. In January 2024, a gold mine tunnel in the Kangaba region of southwestern Mali collapsed, killing 73 people.
