Uzbek professional boxer Shakhram Giyasov (17–0, 10 KOs) claimed a dominant victory over Argentine fighter Franco Maximiliano Ocampo (17–3, 8 KOs) in Atlantic City on the night of April 13. With this win, Giyasov successfully defended his status as the mandatory challenger for the WBA title in the super welterweight division (66.7 kg).
Ocampo started aggressively in the first round, launching counterattacks and demonstrating good footwork. However, near the end of the round, Giyasov landed a powerful left hook, sending Ocampo to the canvas. Although he got back up, he absorbed several more blows before the bell rang to end the round.
In the fourth round, Giyasov saw his opportunity to end the bout. A crushing right hand to the liver dropped Ocampo to his knees — he could not continue. The fight, scheduled for 10 rounds, was over by the 4th.
With this victory, Giyasov improves his professional record to 17 wins in 17 fights, with 10 wins coming by knockout.
Now, Shakhram is expected to face the winner of Jaron Ennis vs. Eimantas Stanionis in a unification bout for the WBA and IBF titles.
After the fight, Giyasov was asked about his recent personal tragedy — he broke down in tears, sharing that he had promised his late daughter to become a world champion.
“This was incredibly difficult for me. I lost my daughter. She’s watching me now, praying for me. I promised her… I want to become a world champion. This win is for her. The next fight — also for her.”
He emphasized that the victory was a result of hard teamwork and discipline during camp, where he focused on body shots and knockout combinations.
On March 19, Giyasov’s two-year-old daughter tragically passed away. The boxer had previously stated that this fight was dedicated to her memory and to the promise he made to become a champion.
