Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola, after the defeat to Tottenham in Matchweek 2 of the English Premier League, expressed his reflections on the team’s play. The Spanish specialist explained the main factors of the result by the inefficient use of chances and mistakes during pressing phases.
According to him, in the clash against Tottenham, similar to what happened with Brentford, many pressings were organized, but this time a different approach was required. “We should have played differently. We could not capitalize on simple situations,” the coach noted, implying that the failure to turn reliable chances into goals directly affected the scoreline.
Guardiola drew attention to the team’s spirit and desire: “The most important thing is movement and aspiration; in this regard everything is in place.” At the same time, he acknowledged that simple mistakes increased under pressure: “But under pressure we allowed simple mistakes; nevertheless, we created enough chances to score. This is football; such situations happen.”
The coach also reminded that the season is only just beginning: “This is still the second match of the season; many fixtures lie ahead.” He emphasized that there is enough time and confidence to return the run of results to the right course.
“I believe in my team. I know which direction we are going. We have many positives, but there are also aspects that need to be improved further. Step by step we will correct them as well,” said Guardiola. According to him, balancing the pressing, making precise decisions in simple situations, and increasing steadiness in the final strike are points to be promptly rectified.
