The head coach of Roma, Gian Piero Gasperini, when speaking about the success with a 1–0 score achieved over Bologna in Round 1 of Serie A, paid special attention to the team’s spirit and game discipline. According to him, in the first clash of the season self-doubt and uncertainties in positions on the field can naturally be observed, but this time loyalty to the game plan and work yielded their result.
“I congratulate the guys. This was the first match; at such a time it is natural for footballers to show self-doubt and an appearance of uncertainty in positions on the pitch. We began the season with a game against a very good team, and thereby our hopes increase even more,” said the coach. According to Gasperini, correct answers in front of the opponent, coordinated actions and strong will played an important role.
He reminded that the share of young players in the squad is large; they still need to develop and accumulate experience. “But today they showed what they are capable of. My team played with order; I saw many positive situations. However, the assessment of the fans will probably not please us,” he added. That is, although the result is positive, the demand is high, and there are enough aspects to work on.
The coach also returned to the issue of accuracy in scoring: “If we had been more precise, we would have scored the second goal and would have finished the game earlier.” In his opinion, in the final phase the speed of decision-making and the share of errors in shots must decrease. “Yes, there are also some worse aspects. But combativeness is seen in the team,” concluded Gasperini.
In short, Roma started the season with a minimal but confident step: discipline in defense, control of the ball in the middle and correct exits from pressure brought the result. At the same time, the coach emphasized that the work on the set goal — increasing the quality of play and the finishing accuracy — will continue without interruption.
