A new event in Portuguese football has sparked widespread discussion. Joze Mourinho's appointment as head coach of Benfica has triggered strong discontent among his former club Porto's supporters.
As is known, one of the first and most brilliant stages of Joze Mourinho's coaching career was precisely with Porto. In 2004, he led the club to victory in the UEFA Champions League and left an indelible mark on the history of Portuguese football. For this reason, many fans considered him a symbolic figure of the club.
However, recent events have completely changed the fans' impressions. During the match against Rio Ave, Porto's supporters sang offensive chants against Mourinho, openly showing their anger. In their view, for a coach who raised the club's name and history to a high level to join the main rival — this is an unparalleled betrayal.
But the negative consequences showed themselves almost immediately. The Portuguese Football Federation officially fined Porto €3190 for the supporters' misconduct.
It is worth noting that Joze Mourinho recently signed a two-year contract with Benfica. Before that, the Portuguese specialist managed Fenerbahce in Türkiye, but at the moment, he had already left that position.
Undoubtedly, Mourinho's work at Benfica may lead to many more interesting events and scandals in Portuguese football. Porto fans have already made it clear that they will never forgive this decision.
