Luka Modric: "At first, I didn’t realize they were applauding me"


Croatian national team midfielder Luka Modrić received great respect and applause during his visit to Montenegro for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. In this match, Croatia managed to overturn a 0-2 deficit and secured a 3-2 victory.

In the 78th minute of the game, under unremarkable circumstances for Croatia, Modrić was substituted onto the field and received a standing ovation from the entire stadium. Luka admitted that he did not immediately realize that the applause was meant specifically for him.

"At first, I didn’t understand that the applause was for me. Perhaps it took me a while to realize it.

I am sincerely grateful. My love for football helps me continue to push forward," Modrić was quoted as saying by pianetamilan.it.

Currently, Luka Modrić represents the Italian club "Milan."
