Former Zenit head coach Vlastimil Petrzela commented on the relationship between Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov and Ukrainian defender Illia Zabarnyi. On Wednesday, they played together for the first time as part of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
According to Petrzela, sports should remain separate from politics, and therefore Safonov and Zabarnyi should not distance themselves from one another while playing on the same team. "It is clear that the cooperation between Safonov and Zabarnyi will not bring peace to the world.
However, Matvey and Illia should not avoid each other because they did not start the conflict. Sports and politics should be kept apart," Petrzela said in an interview with Metaratings.
In Wednesday's match, PSG played to a goalless draw (0-0) against Athletic Club on the road. This game was part of the sixth round of the Champions League group stage.
