Luis Enrique asked to make Safonov the main goalkeeper

Luka Chevalier failed to deliver reliable performances as Paris Saint-Germain's goalkeeper, prompting club officials to recommend Manager Luis Enrique to test Matvei Safonov as the first-choice goalkeeper some time ago. However, Enrique dismissed this suggestion and continued to trust Chevalier.

The coach explained his decision, citing the goalkeeper’s faster adaptation to the team as the reason. This was reported by the French outlet *L’Equipe*.

Notably, Safonov had to wait for Chevalier's injury to make his debut in the 2025/2026 season. The Russian goalkeeper played in PSG's last three matches, keeping a clean sheet in two of them.

As part of Ligue 1, PSG's next match is scheduled for January 4 against Paris FC.
