Real Madrid's head coach, Xabi Alonso, shared his detailed thoughts about the game following their hard-fought 3-2 victory over lower-division team 'Talavera' in the Round of 32 of the Spanish Cup. According to Alonso, such scenarios often occur in cup matches, and this game proved challenging for 'Los Blancos'.
Alonso, first and foremost, highlighted the instability that arose during the game. He noted that even when the score was 3-1, the team lost its caution, leading to a foul and a subsequent goal scored by the opponent, which intensified the pressure. As a result, 'Talavera' re-entered the game, keeping the intrigue alive until the final minutes.
— Such situations are common in cup games. I've encountered them before, and they happen with other teams as well. During the first half, we fully controlled the game and even had opportunities to extend the lead to 3-0, but we failed to capitalize on them. This is why the game remained tense until the very end, — said Alonso.
At the same time, he emphasized that the match was entertaining and lively. According to the coach, the most important thing was achieving the goal and advancing to the next stage. Now, the focus is entirely on the upcoming matches.
Alonso also commented on Kylian Mbappé’s performance. The French forward played a decisive role in this match, scoring a double.
— Mbappé decided the outcome of the game with his goals. Scoring goals has always come easily for him; it’s one of his strongest qualities, — the Real Madrid coach noted.
Regarding the result, Xabi Alonso stated that the team’s primary objective is not just to win but to ensure consistent growth. He remarked that Real Madrid has already taken a step forward in this direction, but work still needs to be done on stability and synchronization.
