Former Russian national team footballer Pavel Pogrebnyak shared his thoughts on PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. He stated that even after Safonov's outstanding performance in the Intercontinental Cup final, he is not convinced that Safonov has firmly secured the status of being the team's main goalkeeper.
As is known, the Russian goalkeeper saved four penalties in the post-match shootout, bringing the trophy to the Parisians. Nevertheless, Pogrebnyak emphasized that it is premature to immediately label Safonov as the “number one” goalkeeper.
“He played brilliantly, saved the team. However, I wouldn't say Matvey has now become the number one.
He has played only four matches this season. There are still areas to work on,” Pogrebnyak's words were cited by Metaratings.
Pogrebnyak also reminded that PSG had purchased Chevalier for a large sum, noting that Safonov needs to consistently prove his level of performance. Matvey Safonov has won a total of six trophies with PSG so far.
