Maresca Reacts to Chelsea's Comeback and Draw Today

Mareska evaluates Chelsea's comeback and draw today

One of the latest dramatic clashes in the English Premier League ended with a hard-fought but valuable point for Chelsea. The Londoners, trailing 0–2 against Newcastle United at St. James' Park, displayed resilience and secured a 2–2 draw.

After the match, the Blues' head coach, Enzo Maresca, shared his thoughts on the game, calling the result entirely logical. According to him, the team can be proud of earning a point after being two goals down away from home.

The first half of the match proved to be quite challenging for Chelsea. Nick Woltemade opened the scoring early on, and before halftime, the hosts managed to double their lead. At that moment, it seemed Newcastle was in full control of the game.

However, the second half presented a completely different picture. First, team captain Reece James reignited hope for a comeback with a brilliant free-kick goal. Shortly after, goalkeeper Robert Sánchez executed a precise pass to launch a quick counterattack, which João Pedro calmly finished, equalizing the score.

During the remaining minutes, the game opened up for both sides. For Chelsea, Alejandro Garnacho’s dangerous strike was saved by the goalkeeper, and Moisés Caicedo’s shot narrowly missed the target. Meanwhile, the hosts also had chances to score a winning goal.

Maresca emphasized that conceding an early goal in the first half significantly impacted the course of the game. Nevertheless, he noted that the changes introduced in the second half allowed the team to turn the match in their favor.

“Erasing a 0–2 deficit at this stadium is extremely difficult for any team. We showed character,” the coach concluded.

Following this draw, Chelsea’s points tally reached 29, allowing the team to retain fourth place in the league standings. Such resilient performances could prove crucial for the Blues as the season progresses.
