Former Real Madrid No.1 and legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas has responded to the criticism surrounding Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso. In his view, both the pressure and the current attitude toward Alonso are far from fair.
According to Casillas, Xabi Alonso is a coach who knows football “from the inside” and understands the modern game. At a club like Real Madrid, daily noise, debate and high demands are normal. But Iker believes some fans and the wider environment are forgetting the reality: the season is only halfway through, and December is not the time for final verdicts.
He gave a simple example: if the team were 12 points behind Barcelona and had also been knocked out of the Cup, then the criticism would be understandable. But since that is not the case, the current reaction is excessive and hard to justify.
Casillas compared it to school: your child goes to class and gets grades, but the real results and overall assessment are seen at the end of the year—in June. Football is the same: delivering a “judgment” in December is rushed.
In short, Casillas’ stance is clear: rather than criticizing Alonso now, he should be given time. There will always be pressure at Real Madrid, but it’s more accurate to judge at the end of the season.
