Instead, Spain will play Egypt in a friendly on March 31 after the Egyptian federation accepted an invitation from the RFEF, according to Marca. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan approved the game, and Mohamed Salah is expected to be the biggest name in the visiting squad as both teams look for strong World Cup preparation.
Spain had already secured another friendly against Serbia on March 27. That match will be played at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica after a planned tournament in Doha was also scrapped, leaving several national teams searching for new opponents during the international window.
UEFA had considered other ways to save the Spain-Argentina clash, including staging it at the Santiago Bernabeu, moving it to another European venue, or making it a two-leg tie. However, Argentina reportedly turned down those options and proposed only a March 31 date, which did not fit Spain’s plans.
These friendlies are now set to be the final tests before the 2026 World Cup. Spain will enter Group H alongside Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, while Egypt are in Group G with Belgium and New Zealand after changes to their original schedule.
