The opening ceremony of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 took place in one of the most beautiful cities on the island of Cyprus with great tradition and grandeur. The event was attended by world-class chess players among men and women, tournament officials, guests, and sports fans.
The ceremony was enriched with cultural and artistic aspects: musical performances, official speeches, and programs reflecting the cultural heritage of the people made the event unique and conducted in a calm and pleasant atmosphere. Even the rainy weather could not affect the mood — spectators and participants enjoyed the event in high spirits. Additionally, special introductory meetings for chess players and guests were organized, which contributed to effective communication and strengthened friendly relations among the participants.
In the evening official part, representatives from governments and chess organizations from various countries participated, expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to organizing the tournament. In particular, FIDE President Arkady Vorkovich in his speech emphasized the significance of this event and its role in the development of chess.
Chess players were invited onto the stage and held an interesting question-and-answer session with fans. Especially the answers of Matthias Blübaum and Wei Yi earned the applause of the audience and created unforgettable memories for the fans.
At the end of the ceremony, the musical performance of Tomai Apergi added further splendor to the event and brought spiritual enjoyment to the participants.
Now, attention is focused on the games starting on March 29, where the contenders for the next World Champion will be determined. These competitions attract interest not only in the chess world but also among all sports fans.
