“Inter” controversy intensifies, punishment risk worsens

A major uproar has erupted around Inter, which leads the Italian championship. According to information released by AGI, the Milan club is at the center of a refereeing scandal.
According to the source, the Milan prosecutor’s office suspects the head of Italy’s refereeing corps, Gianluca Rocca, of assigning “favorable” referees to Inter’s matches. The investigation version says he may have deliberately appointed certain referees for some matches, thereby serving the team’s interests.
If these allegations are confirmed, the consequences could be very serious. In particular, Inter could be deprived of its 2023–2024 championship title and its 2024 Super Cup victory.
A scenario involving even harsher punishment is not being ruled out. Under the current regulations, sanctions such as point deductions and even expulsion from the top division — meaning relegation to Serie B — may also be applied.
According to the information, a criminal fraud case has been opened in connection with the matter, after which Gianluca Rocca left his post.
In short, this could become another major test for Italian football. If the charges are proven, it is likely to become a severe blow for Inter, not only for the season but for the club’s entire history.
