Los Angeles 2028: Olympic Boxing Qualification System Confirmed

Major changes in the sports world: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially announced the qualification procedure for boxing competitions at the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, USA. According to the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation press service, the new system was developed and presented by the 'World Boxing' organization.

Historical equality: Seven for seven

The Los Angeles Olympics will open a new chapter in boxing history. For the first time, full gender equality will be ensured in the competitions: both men and women in seven weight categories each will step into the ring to compete for victory. The total number of participants will be 248, divided equally (124 each).

Meet the updated weight categories:

  • Men: -55 kg, -60 kg, -65 kg, -70 kg, -80 kg, -90 kg, and +90 kg.

  • Women: -51 kg, -54 kg, -57 kg, -60 kg, -65 kg, -70 kg, and -75 kg.

The fight for quotas begins in Kazakhstan

The process of obtaining Olympic licenses will consist of several stages. The qualification bouts in 2027 in Kazakhstan will kick off at the 'World Boxing' World Championships.

After that, boxers will have several more opportunities:

  1. Five continental championships (throughout 2027-2028);

  2. Two world qualification tournaments (in the first half of 2028).

The supervisor of the new era — 'World Boxing'

From now on, 'World Boxing' will fully oversee the qualification processes and the organization of the competitions in Los Angeles. In the coming days, applications will be accepted from countries wishing to host these prestigious tournaments.

As a reminder, the 2028 Summer Olympics will take place from July 14–30. Given that the Uzbek boxing school is a world leader, we look forward to record-breaking results from our compatriots once again!

In your opinion, how will the change in weight categories affect the chances of Uzbek boxers?
