Requests for psychological help to ChatGPT are increasing: is privacy at risk?

In the age of new technologies, more and more people are turning to artificial intelligence to find answers to their most personal and intimate questions. In particular, the number of users of the ChatGPT platform seeking psychological help and advice is growing daily. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warns about the lack of privacy and legal protection in this process.

According to Sam Altman, conversations with ChatGPT are not protected by legal confidentiality or privacy in the same way as communication with a doctor or a licensed psychologist. If a user discloses personal or most sensitive problems on the platform, the court or other official bodies may demand to provide this data, and OpenAI will be obliged to hand it over. Altman considers this unfair and wrong.

For example, conversations with doctors, lawyers, and psychotherapists are protected by law as professional secrecy and confidentiality. However, such protection mechanisms do not yet exist for artificial intelligence platforms. According to Altman, it is time to develop a separate privacy concept for conversations with AI services such as ChatGPT.

Another important aspect of this issue is that especially young people are increasingly using ChatGPT for psychological support, life coaching, or relationship advice. But unlike encrypted messengers like WhatsApp, OpenAI employees can read users' chats to improve the model or to detect cases of abuse.

According to OpenAI policy, remote chats in both free and paid versions of ChatGPT are completely deleted after 30 days, unless the company is required to retain them for legal or security reasons.

The bottom line is that although getting psychological help with artificial intelligence has become easier, users should still be careful with their personal data and secrets. In the near future, separate legislation on human rights and privacy for AI platforms is likely to be required.
