Apple introduces restrictions for M3 Ultra computers

Apple has announced significant changes for its Mac Studio computers. The option to install 512 GB of RAM on devices with the M3 Ultra chip has been temporarily suspended. Additionally, the company has increased the price for memory upgrades from 96 GB to 256 GB from $1,600 to $2,000. Due to these changes, order delivery times have been pushed back to May. This situation is directly related to the global semiconductor shortage. Currently, memory manufacturers are shifting their capacity toward producing HBM memory required for artificial intelligence systems. This has led to a reduction in the production volume of standard DDR5 memory. Major manufacturers like SK hynix have reported a sharp decline in warehouse stocks and stated they will be unable to fully meet customer demand this year.

According to analyst forecasts, DRAM prices could reach record highs in the coming years. TrendForce data suggests that memory prices are expected to rise by more than 90 percent in the first quarter of 2026. This is driven by massive demand in the AI industry, as modern servers require vast amounts of memory.

For Apple, this situation is becoming increasingly complex. Due to technical difficulties in producing the M4 Ultra chip, the company is currently forced to stick with the M3 Ultra. Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that the memory shortage will negatively impact the company's revenue in the second quarter.
