Reading app Tome is shutting down
Tome, an app designed for the reading community and book tracking, has announced it is shutting down. Built on the foundation of the BookTok community on TikTok, the platform allowed users to rate books, get recommendations, and share favorite quotes. This was reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
Despite having a user base of over 100,000, Tome could not maintain its position in a competitive market. Company representatives stated that the project became financially unsustainable due to the high costs of maintaining a social network that supports memes, GIFs, and videos.
The existence of many alternative apps for readers such as Fable, StoryGraph, and Bookly, along with the dominance of the Goodreads platform, created challenges for startups like Tome. Competition among these apps intensified as reading culture became more popular, especially among Gen Z.
According to official information, the Tome app and its website will be completely shut down on May 29. The company has advised users to export their data, including uploaded photos and lists of read books.
