Panasonic 4680 battery production delayed

Panasonic Energy, a subsidiary of Panasonic Holdings, is facing significant challenges in commercializing its 4680-type cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Mass production remains stalled as the company has yet to receive final approval and major orders from customers. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
Serial production of these batteries, which have a higher energy storage capacity, was initially planned for the end of the 2024 fiscal year. However, the production timeline has been pushed back several times, and the target set for March 2026 is no longer being met.
Amid these challenges, Panasonic Energy froze its plans in 2024 to build a third plant in the US for 4680 cell production. Additionally, the launch date for the electric vehicle battery plant in Kansas has been postponed indefinitely.
Changing demand in the electric vehicle market and production issues have forced the company to rethink its strategy. Currently, Panasonic is shifting some of its production capacity to the sector for energy storage systems (ESS) batteries.
