xAI Faces Billion-Dollar Losses: Musk's Ambitions vs. Real Revenue

Founded by Elon Musk in late 2023, xAI reported an operating loss of over $6 billion last year. Financial statements released as part of preparations for SpaceX's IPO show that the company's annual revenue is quite modest compared to its expenses. For 2025, xAI's total revenue was approximately $3.2 billion. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports.

Notably, the bulk of this revenue comes not from AI products, but from integration with the X (formerly Twitter) platform. X platform advertising revenue reached $1.8 billion, while income from the Grok chatbot is estimated at approximately $270 million. For comparison, OpenAI has reported annual revenue of $24 billion, and Anthropic has reached $30 billion.

A large portion of the company's expenses is directed toward research and development, specifically the purchase of NVIDIA graphics processors. In 2025, over $5 billion was spent for these purposes. Although Elon Musk announced the creation of two supercomputers named Colossus, part of this infrastructure is currently being leased to Anthropic.

In addition to financial difficulties, xAI is also facing personnel issues. In recent months, several founders and key employees have left the team. Musk stated that the company was built incorrectly from the start and is currently being reorganized from scratch. The main focus is now shifting to developing AI-assisted programming tools.
