Samsung is building a major memory plant for smartphones and cars

Samsung Electronics is preparing to significantly expand its semiconductor business in Vietnam. According to documents reviewed by Reuters, the South Korean company will invest nearly $1.5 billion in the construction of a memory chip testing facility. This was reported by Ixbt.com .

The new facility is being built approximately 60 km north of Hanoi and is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2027. This project will be Samsung's first plant of this type in Vietnam. The facility will focus on testing DRAM and NAND chips used in smartphones, laptops, cars, and other electronic devices.

Against the backdrop of rapid development in artificial intelligence, major manufacturers are shifting their capacity toward producing memory chips for AI servers. This has led to a shortage of simpler chips in the market. According to project materials, the plant will have the capacity to test over 153 billion gigabits of DRAM and over 255 billion gigabits of NAND memory annually.

The Vietnamese government approved these investments as early as this spring. Samsung is also considering further business expansion in the future: the company may reinvest its profits to allocate up to $2.5 billion for the construction of a second facility.
