Google Gemini user base nears one billion

Google is on the verge of reaching another major milestone with its AI-powered Gemini project. According to the company's Q2 2026 earnings report, the number of users for this smart assistant has surpassed 950 million. This figure indicates that the Gemini system is very close to joining the "billion-user club" alongside Google Search, Gmail, Android, and YouTube. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports.

The fact that the number of Gemini users has tripled over the past year is surprising experts. Notably, this figure was around 750 million in February of this year. Such rapid growth allows Google to compete effectively with its main rival in the AI market — OpenAI's ChatGPT project, which crossed the one-billion mark in June.

Competition and the impact of new features

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai noted in a discussion with investors that users have responded very positively to new agent features like Daily Brief and Gemini Spark. According to him, the company is introducing useful innovations at an unprecedented pace. This is increasing Gemini's popularity not only among Android users but also on the iOS platform. In particular, the launch of the Nano Banana image generation model has provided additional convenience for Apple device owners.

According to AppFigures analysis, the Gemini app has been downloaded over 137 million times on iOS in the last 12 months. Sensor Tower's "State of AI" report notes that the ChatGPT app's share of the AI assistant market has fallen below 50 percent for the first time. At the same time, Gemini's share has risen to 27.7 percent, beginning to shift the market balance.

Search engine and economic efficiency

Although many users are switching to AI assistants instead of traditional search engines, Google Search has not lost its position. On the contrary, the AI-updated search system is contributing to an increase in the number of queries. According to company data, the Q&A-style AI mode has already reached over one billion users.
