Three detention centers completely suspended in Tashkent region

During the past period, the activities of three local detention centers in the Tashkent region were inspected, and it was determined that they did not comply with all essential sanitary and hygiene requirements. Consequently, the operation of these detention centers was temporarily suspended.

According to information, the representative of the Oliy Majlis on human rights – the ombudsman in the Tashkent region, together with various public groups, conducted monitoring in June 2025 at the detention centers of the Kuyi Chirchik and Chinoz districts within the internal affairs departments. Based on the identified deficiencies, the ombudsman submitted an official report to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which became an important step to ensure lawful and safe operations.

It has been reported that a number of necessary measures were taken to eliminate the identified shortcomings and to align the institutions with modern standards. In particular, the ventilation system in the Kuyi Chirchik detention center was completely revised, and radio devices were installed. In addition, the cells were equipped with the necessary equipment and modern tools, creating a safe and comfortable environment for the detainees.

The exercise yards and sanitary networks, including toilets and washing areas, were also renovated and fully brought into compliance with hygiene and health standards. These measures were of great importance in creating a healthy and safe environment for detainees and staff.

Furthermore, the operation of temporary detention centers in the Chinoz, Qibray, and Yukorichirchik districts, which did not meet sanitary and hygiene requirements, was suspended on July 21, 2025, by order of the Minister of Internal Affairs. This decision was made taking into account the opinions of local residents and the public and is aimed at ensuring the quality of life and safety in the detention facilities.
