Mahallas to be renewed: a 7-trillion-soum program launched

Under the chairmanship of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a video conference was held to discuss improving the mahalla system and ensuring efficiency in local governance. The meeting focused on enhancing mahalla infrastructure, improving living standards, and promoting sustainable regional development.

The head of state emphasized that the mahalla is not just an administrative unit, but “the heart of society,” highlighting the need to modernize it in line with the requirements of the time.

According to a presidential decree signed last week, 33 districts and 330 “vulnerable” mahallas have been identified to reflect the image of New Uzbekistan. Each district will receive 100 billion soums, and each mahalla — 5 billion soums.

In addition, $100 million attracted from the World Bank and the Islamic Development Bank will be directed toward implementing projects in these areas.

Furthermore, an additional 2 trillion soums will be allocated to build the infrastructure of key “driver” projects. In total, more than 7 trillion soums will be invested to improve the lives of mahalla residents.

During the meeting, the president assigned specific tasks to regional and district governors. Each regional hokim will choose two struggling mahallas, and each district hokim — one, taking personal responsibility for their development.

These mahallas will receive 5 billion soums each, and it is expected that the lives of residents in 236 mahallas will see significant improvements.

The program also prioritizes upgrading roads, water, and electricity networks, as well as communications, promoting entrepreneurship, and strengthening education and healthcare infrastructure.

As President Mirziyoyev noted, the mahalla is the center of reforms, and public satisfaction is the main criterion. Therefore, the program must positively affect every household, fostering confidence and a sense of renewal among citizens.

Thus, the new initiative aims not only to modernize mahallas but also to transform them into strong economic, social, and spiritual centers. Once implemented, every citizen will feel the positive changes in mahalla life.
