Serious reforms have begun in the system of combating drug addiction and drug crime in Uzbekistan. Through the newly adopted national strategy for 2024-2028, the state plans to take activities against this dangerous disease to a new level. The main goal is to protect the health of the population, especially young people, preserve the nation's gene pool, and strengthen a healthy lifestyle in society.
The measures outlined in the document provide for a significant strengthening of the system of punishment and control over drug trafficking. One of the most important changes is the introduction of a sentence of up to twenty years in prison for organizing drug trafficking, promoting it online, or establishing drug laboratories. This measure aims not only to punish the crime but also to strike at its root.
Also, any drug crime committed against minors is now considered an aggravating circumstance. This means that in such cases, the punishment will be even harsher. Liability for the distribution of narcotic drugs in educational institutions or their circulation among students will be doubled.
Within the framework of the National Strategy, the practice of early conditional release of persons who have committed certain types of drug crimes will be limited. This, in turn, strengthens the sense of responsibility of persons who have violated the law. At the same time, strict state control will be established over the circulation of chemicals used in the production of narcotic drugs - precursors. Their list will be expanded, and a clear reporting system will be introduced for each item.
Officials emphasized that these measures are aimed not only at curbing crime but also at ensuring a healthy future for the population. Over the years, new forms of drug crime have been observed in the country, especially through the Internet. Therefore, the state intends to apply systemic and modern approaches in this area.
Through the new strategy, Uzbekistan will create a solid legal basis for combating crime, using international experience in the fight against drug addiction. This includes not only strict punishment but also strengthening prevention, education, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
