As concerns about air quality continue to grow in Tashkent, officials once again emphasized that one of the main sources of pollution is motor vehicles. According to Aziz Abduhakimov, chairman of the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, due to the significant harm caused by AI-80 gasoline, its sale and import throughout the country will be completely banned starting from December 1, qumita.uz reported.
He stated that AI-80 gasoline, which had been widely used for many years because of its low price, played a serious role in the pollution of the capital’s air. Therefore, this decision is expected to help improve the ecological situation in Tashkent.
At the meeting, it was also noted that the number of cars in the capital has sharply increased. Currently, about one million vehicles move through Tashkent’s streets daily. Of them, 650,000 are registered in the city itself, while 300,000–350,000 vehicles arrive from the regions each day. Five years ago, this number was almost twice as low.
Abduhakimov added that the green–yellow–red sticker system, introduced to regulate traffic flow, may also show its effectiveness. According to him, in other countries this mechanism helped gradually remove old and environmentally harmful vehicles from circulation.
Officials believe that the new rules and restrictions will become one of the most important steps toward improving air quality.
